MOSCOW -- Former Grand Slam champions Ana Ivanovic and Samantha Stosur made the Kremlin Cup quarterfinals with straight-sets victories on Thursday to set up a rematch of last years semifinal. The former top-ranked Ivanovic beat Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-1, while 2011 U.S. Open winner Stosur extended her winning streak to seven matches by beating Alize Cornet of France 6-4, 6-1 in the second round. Meanwhile, mens top seed Richard Gasquet, making his debut in Moscow, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Evgeny Donskoy of Russia. The fourth-seeded Ivanovic led 5-0 in the first set, traded early breaks in the second and rolled the rest of the way. "It wasnt an easy match for me," Ivanovic said. "I really started well. But shes a tough player and the second set was much tougher that the scoreline indicates. But I added power in the important moments and was very pleased to win." On Sunday, former French Open champion Ivanovic lost to Angelique Kerber of Germany in the final in Linz -- her first appearance in a final since winning her 11th title in Bali in 2011. Stosur, who won her second title of the season last Sunday in Osaka, won five consecutive games to win the first set and go 2-0 up in the second. "I did what I had to do," Stosur said. "I made her play more balls when I had a chance to attack deep, so overall it was a pretty solid match." Stosur rallied to beat Ivanovic in the semifinals last year before falling to Caroline Wozniacki in the final. "It was a very tough match. She plays differently than lots of other girls. She has lot of kick, a lot of power," Ivanovic said of that match and Stosur. "This year we are meeting a little bit earlier and I really hope I can avenge that loss." Gasquet, who suffered an early exit at Shanghai last week and dropped to 10th in the rankings, hampering his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals in London next month, was pushed hard by the unheralded Russian. Gasquet broke twice in the first set, but Donskoy won the second with a break midway through. Gasquet won five consecutive games in the decider and closed the match on his second match point. "I wasnt playing good enough in the second set," Gasquet said. "But I have experience. I just added power in the beginning of the third and I managed to break him for a 3-0 lead and that made the difference. I began to play with confidence. It was a good win." Gasquet is chasing fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the eighth and final spot in London. Earlier, veteran Ivo Karlovic landed 16 aces to eliminate fifth-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-3, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (6), while qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan defeated fourth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-4, 6-4. "This resilience training starts now," Canadas womens soccer coach said. The Canadians face South Korea at Edmontons Commonwealth Stadium on Oct. 30, a friendly that both gives the women a chance to get used to the stadium where theyll open up their World Cup campaign, and tests their resiliency. Average temperatures for Oct. 30 in the Alberta capital range from 0 to 6 C. "The players need to see that it is part of the test to keep themselves focused on the task at hand," Herdman said on a conference call Thursday to announce his preliminary roster. "Im hoping the warm reception of the crowd warms everything up for us; the more people we put in the stadium, the warmer it will be." The Canadian team that will face South Korea features 13 Olympic bronze medallists plus 16-year-old national team rookie Sura Yekka, as Herdman continues to evaluate young talent before the final push to the World Cup. Star striker Christine Sinclair is one of the 13 who captured bronze for Canada at the 2012 London Olympics, while Yekka, a defender from Mississauga, Ont., earned her first call-up to Canadas senior squad after an impressive showing for the national under-20 side. "As a 16-year-old Sura fits the profile of that modern fullback, she ticks a lot of the boxes that were looking for, and I think thats whats exciting," Herdman said. "As I said to the young players when they came into that camp, if youre good enough youre old enough. And this player is someone that looks really exciting and could have a ppromising future.dddddddddddd." Canada, which has three wins and a loss all-time against South Korea, was beaten 3-1 by the Koreans the last time the two teams met, at the Yongchuan Cup tournament in January. Twelve of the 18 players on the current roster played the last time the two countries faced off. Yekka is one of 32 new faces Herdman has had into camp in his quest to field a younger team when Canada hosts the World Cup. He warned there would be growing pains in the early going of what he called a "two-steps-back three-steps-forward" approach. "When you immerse 30-odd new players into a program, no other national teams do that straight after a World Cup, you wont see that happen very often," Herdman said. The game marks the first for the Canadian women at Commonwealth Stadium since a friendly against Germany in 2005. There will be more to come in Edmonton, as Canada will play its opening game of the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup at Commonwealth. Cold weather or not, the choice of stadium was part of Herdmans World Cup preparation plans, "to get the experience of playing in that opening stadium," he said. Hes hoping Edmontonians will "give us the best chance to experience what its going to be like at the Womens World Cup because bringing the team here, its important that we get a sense of how its going to roll out, hows its going to feel, what all the processes and systems are that weve got to get used to to perform on the big day." Herdman believes South Korea will qualify for the World Cup, and could even be in Canadas group when they play the preliminary round in Edmonton.
